Fat as Hell…

and not going to take it anymore!

I Don’t Know Where To Begin…

I was talking to a friend at work the other day and explained to her that, lately, for reasons I don’t really understand, I’ve been feeling so sluggish. I feel like I have ZERO energy and that just making it to work and back each day is a chore. I don’t understand what’s wrong with me. I’m not sick. I’m not under a great deal of stress (as I was in February). I don’t feel like I’m being exceptionally lazy, I just feel like I *can’t* do anything beyond what I am minimally required to each day. That said, while this week was not a disaster, it certainly wasn’t a triumph in the “getting healthy” department either. I overate (mildly) on most days and didn’t exercise even once. Not the way I wanted to spend the month of March, I can tell you that.

So… as I said, I was talking to my friend at work. She’s a nice girl, a few years older than I am, and definitely a holistic liver. If it’s not organic, raised in a cruelty free environment and good for you in some way, she doesn’t eat it. She doesn’t subscribe to the mainstream medical establishment either and believes in nurturing your health from the inside out. Put another way, she lives the way I want to — albeit a bit more to the extreme. Anyway, I was telling her about how I was feeling sluggish and she said, without blinking, “oh, it’s the pollen.” I’m sure my expression said, “um… huh?” because she then went onto explain that right now there’s a ton of pollen in the air here, (she’s right, each afternoon I go out to my car to go home and find it covered in a thin dusting of yellow pollen), and that pollen is a foreign substance, and when our bodies take it in, (through breathing), it’s bound to have an effect. She theorized that our bodies have to work pretty hard to expel any foreign substance, and thus, makes us feel sluggish and overworked.

Hmmm.

I’ll be honest, I’m not sure how much of that I buy into, but I’ve been giving it some thought this week (while I haven’t been exercising).

My other theory is a little more distressing. For about 6 months now, I’ve been taking blood pressure medicine to regulate my previously out of control blood pressure. That fateful day last July when I went to the doctor and he basically told me that if I didn’t lose weight, I would die, my blood pressure was 208/105. Yeah. I know. Anyway, despite my objections, fears and deep, deep misgivings, I followed the doctor’s orders and started taking BP meds in order to get those numbers down. From the beginning, I’ve told myself that this would only be temporary and that as soon as the weight was off, that I’d quit taking it. So, here it is 8 months later, and I’ve taken off 65lbs, changed by diet drastically and incorporated exercise into my life in a way that it never has been before – and I find myself wondering if maybe my blood pressure is dipping too low. Is it possible that my natural blood pressure is dropping due to these changes and that meds are taking it down to a level that is leaving me with no energy?

Of course, this is all conjecture on my part. What I need to do is start monitoring my blood pressure on a regular basis, but I’ve tried that before without success. When I first started taking the BP meds I bought SEVERAL BP cuffs and they either didn’t fit or didn’t work until I *finally* gave up. Thing is, blaming my lack of energy on LOWER blood pressure could just be wishful thinking on my part, but finding out for sure is much easier said than done. *sigh*

Maybe the thing to do is to just quit making excuses and get off my ass.
Of course, that *too* is easier said than done, right?

where-i-sit1.jpgAnyway, in brighter news I decide to join in Felicia’s “photo fun” day post. She had the brilliant idea of taking specific pictures every once in awhile to help us all get to know one another a bit better. The first one is themed “Where do you sit?” Basically, the idea is, take a picture of where you plant your bottom when you’re on the computer posting about how you *should* be exercising. :) Here’s my spot. My husband and I actually have an office elsewhere in our house, but (unless we’re having people over for dinner) we keep the computer at the dining room table (which is just off the living room and kitchen) so that working on the computer doesn’t mean that we have to be in a separate room. Between the two of us, the computer is used a lot and it just feels too isolating to have to have to sit in the office to work on it. This way too, he can peek over my shoulder when he wants to and make sure that I’m not fibbing about anything, (not that I would, of course!) Anyway… I look forward to seeing some of your spots!

And finally, one more thing before I close. Against my better judgement, I *did* weigh yesterday.

254lbs – 255.3lbs = +1.3lbs
Yeah. I’m up.

*sigh*

(Oh. And yes, I changed my theme again. I’ll try to stick with this one for a bit).

  1. Your friend sounds like my kind of person… Although I’m not so sure about the pollen. The first thing I do when something is amiss is to drink more water. It normally flushes out the culprit and will certainly help if it’s the pollen.

I think you may have to re-assess your BP meds. A lot has changed since you started taking them and they may not be needed anymore.

Your house is beautiful! I like the marine theme. And I also changed my template today!

  2. Could be a mix of both, the pollen and the BP. There is mucho pollen here, too, and until someone pointed it out to me, I thought I was coming down with something — my eyes were swollen and boy was I tired!

Love the work area — gorgeous!

  3. WOW looks great in here!!

Thanks so much for participating in the Fun Photo Challenge. Its lots of fun to see where everyone “sits” lol.

I would for sure check with your doctor about your BP meds. I know that several people I know lost a lot of weight and had to completely come off their meds as it was dropping their levels way to low. Don’t take a chance. Call your doctor about it ok!!

I also know that if you are low in B vitamins or iron it will also make you tired.

Ok that was my *I have no professional experience* 2 cents LOL.

Hope you are having a SUPER day!

  4. Have you thought about going to the doctor and finding out if you even need the meds anymore?

  5. Hanlie: Water is good advice. However, I already drink between 2-3 liters a day — sometimes more. I’m a water fiend! :) I don’t think I can drink anymore!

Bikini: *shrugs* I don’t know, it’s just given me something to think about. It’s raining today… one of those slow, all day kinds of rains. Perhaps some of the pollen will be swept away in the downpour.

Felicia: I take a multi-vitamin each day (along with a few other supplements) and my diet is pretty high in iron. Not sure about vitamin B, though. I’ll do some checking. As for the doctor…

Andrew: I actually have a doctor’s appointment at the end of April (they’re not super easy to get) so at the latest I’ll be checking in with him then. In the meantime, I’m going to try to do a little monitoring on my own, if possible.

You guys are all so bright and brilliant and supportive. I’m throwing big kisses at all of you. *mmmmwaa!*

  6. First thing I was thinking about was your iron levels – ok, you’re saying your diet is high in iron…Why not get blood taken and get all necessary things checked out? I hope you’ll feel much better soon – I know what that’s like (in my case, my iron levels were in fact too low).

  7. What you describe sounds very similar to what I experienced last summer, about a month after I started exercising so much. It felt like a huge effort to just get one foot in front of the other. I went through the same thought process you did, and wondered about blood pressure. I’ve been on medication for years, and the dosage had been increased the previous year.

Since we have an onsite nurse at work, I walked over and got a blood pressure taken. It was 90/60. We took it every day for a week. It was almost always too low. I set up an appointment with the doctor and he lowered the dosage to what it had been originally.

Now, 60 pounds later, he’s considering dropping it all together, or changing to something lesser.

Let us know how it all comes out!! Take care!

  8. um, firstly can i just say how much i LOVE your house?! it’s so cute!!! i am eying your built-in shelves with envy!

hmm, it’s funny, i just wrote an entry about feeling like crap because of allergies. it’s weird how we sometimes talk about similiar things around the same time, before we’ve read each others’ blogs. it’s nice to know i’m not alone!

I have a friend who’s really into the organic/herbal stuff too and she’s been a big influence in my conversion to a more holistic lifestyle. when my dad was heavy, he had difficulty taking an accurate measurement of his blood pressure as well b/c the cuffs don’t come very big. i definitely suggest that you find a home-bp kit and check it on a regular basis. But sluggishness can be a result of lots of things….How is your diet? Blood sugar levels? Vitamin/nutrient deficiencies? Lack of iron can cause fatigue because if your red blood cells numbers are low, less oxygen is getting to your organs and tissues, causing lethargy and fatigue. Also, maybe you try some “cleansing herbal tonics” to help detoxify your liver and kidneys and improve blood circulation? (maybe your friend will have some suggestions or if you want, just email me).

anyway, i’m sorry to hear that you’re feeling like crap. honey, i KNOW how that’s like!

  9. What a cool room!

anyway… allergies can do that, there IS a lot of pollen in some areas. It’s pretty unlikely that your BP has gotten so low. If you’re cutting back a whole lot on certain foods though you COULD have low iron, that isn’t terribly unusual. It wouldn’t take much to verify either of those things.

  10. My first thought was, “are you pregnant?” But then, I’m a birth junkie, and when tag-surfing on wordpress I’ve seen a lot of blogs lately in which women are blogging about their very early pregnancies, and how tired they are. Pollen makes a likely story too. If you think it’s allergies, taking extra vitamin C might help. (It cleared up my son’s eyes when they were all goopy from apparent allergies.) And I’d get your blood pressure taken again — you’ve lost a lot of weight, and being overweight is a definite risk factor in blood pressure. So yours probably has gone down quite a bit naturally since your body isn’t under as much strain since you’ve lost SIXTY-FIVE POUNDS (good for you!)!! Also, fwiw, my mom found out her bp was up (and she takes no meds — we have to practically force tylenol into her when she has a toothache or something), and she started drinking a gallon of water a day, and within a couple of weeks her bp was back to normal. Still, you drink a good amount of water, so I don’t know if adding another liter would help that much.

  11. The Lassie: I will have blood taken when I go to the doctor at the end of April. Hopefully, I’ll get it worked out before then, but if all else fails, maybe my bloodwork will solve the mystery. Thanks! :)

Cammy: Gosh, having my doctor consider dropping the meds would be a dream come true for me. I doubt seriously I’m at that point yet because it seems as though I was *more far gone* than you were… I *still* have at least 100 MORE lbs to lose (I think) so I doubt it’s time to come off of the stuff all together — but man, does your story give me some hope. I am *so* looking forward to the day when I say goodbye to that stuff for good. Thanks!

Alice: I know! We’re on the same wavelength or something, huh?? :) I’ve been hearing about the “herbal tonic” things lately but I don’t know enough about them yet. I’ve been thinking about doing something like that, not just for me, but for my husband as well who may have done some permanent damage to his liver about a year ago when he was going through some major tooth agony but refused to go to the dentist for about 6 months (don’t get me started!) He took so many over the counter drugs that after his last check up/bloodwork the doctor literally said that his liver looked like that of a chronic alcoholic. *sigh* Anyway, good advice… thank you, my friend! Hope you feel better soon!

Kate: I guess I’ve just always thought of allergies (especially from pollen) as affecting a person in more conspicuous ways — you know, runny nose, red eyes, sore throat, etc… I never would have guess that lethargy alone could be a symptom.

Kathy: More water!! ACK!! :) Seriously, I doubt my blood pressure is at the level where I could go off the meds, but I was thinking it might have dipped low enough to maybe warrant a lowering of my dosage. *shrugs* I guess we’ll have to see. Sounds like your mom rocks! :)

    Cheers all!

  12. I love your dining room! Very pretty. I haven’t taken a picture of my space(s) yet, but I should be able to soon. Although, mine is nowhere near as lovely.
